Dosage and administration

The usual daily adult dose is 1 tablet 3 times a day. The dose should be adjusted according to the age of patient and severity of symptoms.

No reports of contraindication have been found until present days.

Mecobalamin is generally well tolerated. However, few gastrointestinal side effects like anorexia, nausea or diarrhea may infrequently occur. Dermatological reaction like skin rash may rarely occur.

Not recommended during pregnancy & lactation.

Mecobalamin should not be used over a period of months, if there is lack of satisfactory clinical response in patients with megaloblastic anemia probably due to vitamin B12 deficiency or with peripheral neuropathies. Prolonged use of larger doses of mecobalamin isn’t recommended for patients whose occupation requires handling mercury or its compounds. Use of mecobalamin should be discontinued if symptoms of hypersensitivity, e.g. skin eruptions occur.

Mecobalamin is a vitamin B12-containing coenzyme with an active methyl base that occurs in the blood and in the cerebrospinal fluid. It is taken up by the nerve tissues more actively and extensively than other homologous of vitamin B12. Biochemically Mecobalamin accelerates the metabolic pathways of nucleic acids, proteins and lipids through its involvement in the transmethylation reaction. Thus it acts to repair damaged nerve tissue in nerve disorders such as axonal degeneration, demyelination; and inhibits abnormal conduction. It is also involved in erythroblast maturation, promotion of erythroblast division and heme synthesis, thus acting to improve the status of the blood in megaloblastic anemia.
