DEXTROMETHORPHAN Tablet

For the treatment of dry, irritating coughs.

Dosage and administration

Adults and children over 12 years of age: 1-2 tablets x 2-3 times per day.

Children 6-12 years of age: 1 tablet, twice per day.

Children 2-6 years of age: 1/2 tablet. twice per day.

Hypersensitivity to any of ingredients.

Patients are now taking a prescription MAO inhibitor or for 14 days after stopping the MAO inhibitor drug therapy.

Patients with cough due to asthma or respiratory failure.

Pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers.

Children under 2 years of age.

Dizziness, fatigue, palpitations, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, skin eruptions and gastrointestinal disorders.

Combination of dextromethorphan and CNS depression-producing medications may potentiate the CNS depressant effects of the medications or dextromethorphan. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking dextromethorphan.

Caution is needed in patients with persistent or chronic cough caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or if cough is accompanied by excessive phlegm.

Dextromethorphan should not be given to patients at risk of developing respiratory failure.

Use with caution in atopic children.

Do not drive or operate machinery if drowsiness or dizziness occurs.

Dextromethorphan is an antitussive agent which has no analgesic or addictive properties. The drug acts centrally and elevates the threshold for coughing. It is about equal to codeine in depressing the cough reflex. In therapeutic dosage, dextromethorphan does not inhibit ciliary activity.
